In an effort to find meaning in my life-I am going to give myself a classics education (the type of education that was customary for adults of means prior to the 20th century). This education will include learning Latin, Greek, and French. I have been inspired in this endeavor by the writings of Sherrilyn Kenyon and Deborah Harkness. In a perfect world I would attend university to get this training. However, practical concerns such as the need to make a living and already exorbitant student loan debt. I am writing this blog as a form of accountability and perhaps to inspire others to do something that they have fleetingly thought they might like to do bus dismissed as too impractical. So what am I doing now? I have taken the first step by ordering Latin language books on Amazon. Waiting sucks! I will keep you posted.
Latin was a spoken language earlier than 200 b.c. Later it became the basis of the Italian, Spanish, French, Romanian, and Portugese. Although it is no longer a spoken language, Latin still provides a basis to understand the past. Transparent language is a website that provides a daily word. It even provides a pronunciation. Yesterday's word was "amor" meaning love. It is also the root for amorous.
I haven't been slacking. I am working with Latin Made Simple-which is actually a bit misleading. For starters-I have either forgotten a lot more grammar than I realized or some of these cases are unique to latin (ablative). There are also a couple of places where the translations are off? I'm going to keep at it though.
